Richard Ellis b Aug. 16, 1704 Dublin, Ireland; d. Oct. 7, 1797 Ashfield, Ma.
According to his own account, Richard Ellis was born on August 16, 1704 in Dublin, Ireland. His mother was Irish and his father was from Wales and was in one of the British armed forces. Richard spent his youth in Dublin but seems to have traveled in other parts of Ireland. When he was 13, his father being dead, his mother decided to send him to Virginia where he had an uncle with whom he could find a home. She therefore paid his passage to this country, but the ship's captain landed in the Massachusetts Bay and sold the boy into servitude until he came of age.
After Richard obtained his majority, he went to Easton, MA where he married Jane Phillips in 1728. They moved about 1740 to Deerfield, MA. Richard's father-in-law, Capt. John Phillips of Easton, was one of the soldiers in the expedition against Quebec in 1690 and consequently was among those who became entitled to rights of land which is what probably led Richard and his family to settle in Ashfield, MA in 1745 (then called Huntstown).

Jane Phillips wife of Richard Ellis was born July 1, 1709 Easton, Ma.; d 1760 Ashfield, Ma.

Jane was daughter of Capt. John Phillips and Elizabeth Drake. Capt. John Phillips received rights to land in Huntstown now known as Ashfield, Ma. for his participation in the Expedition to Canada.

Isreal Phillips Jr. son of Isreal Phillips Sr. and Mehitable Belding and wife of Sabrina Ward. He was b. March 23, 1804 in Ashfield Ma.; d. May 8, 1869 in Ashfield, Ma.

Sabrina Phillips and Ralph Phillips of Ashfield say that Israel Phillips who last dwelt in Ashfield died on the ninth of May 1869 leaving a widow whose name is Sabrina Phillips and his only heirs-at-law and next of kin as follows

Aug. 12, 1855 in Ashfield, Ma.................Israel Phillips was called "Doc" Phillips. Although not a doctor, it appears that the name "Doc" was applied to the seventh son from a superstition of then popular that the seventh son had neccessarily some mysterious or curative virtues as a physician..
