at the mouth of the Scantic River, ship building and shipping were carried on from before 1728 to 1820.
here was the home of General Roger Wolcott, colonial Governor, 1750-1754 and the birthplace of his son, Oliver Wolcott, signer of Declaration of Independence and Governor of Connecticut 1796-1797.
Other distinquished native sons:
Eli Terri, originator of the cheap "Yankee Clock"
John Fitch, inventor of the first successful steamboat,1787
Grant family: homestead nearby is the ancestral home of
General Ulysses S. Grant (President Grant).

Cyndy > Birth place of JONATHAN EDWARDS..........first American theologian and philospher. Born in 1703, son of Timothy Edwards. He graduated from Yale at 17, was pastor in Bolton (Mass. or Conn?), tutor at Yale, missionary at Stockbridge (Mass) and in 1758 became president of Princeton University where he died. HIs grandson, Aaron Burr, became the 3rd vice president of U.S.
