Cyndy > From this point on....the pictures are of Old Saybrook..... the settlement area. --- Lion Gardiner.......built the fort and laid out the town.....worked for John Winthrop,JR
Cyndy > Remains of the old fort and settlement........the wood standing up right all around are where the walls of the fort were.....the ground slopes away which probably was a moat at the time of settlement but has gradually filled .

Cyndy > the outline in dim red/brown was the original boundary of the Old Saybrook Colony......now includes the towns of Westbrook - 1840 Essex - 1852 Deep River - 1947 Chester-1836 Old Lyme- 1855 Lyme--1665 Old Saybrook-1854 ...........the boundry is dated 1633. Imagine defending all that with few men and one little fort....
Cyndy > The Saybrook colony was sold to the Connecticut Colony (Hartford) in 1644......the towns you saw in last photo....were established......and what you see above was all that remained of Old Saybrook....by 1647
Cyndy > what you see in the back ground are remains of an old engine house for the railroad that ran through the area. --- earlier times, this was a ferry, chartered in 1662 by the General Court of Hartford. John Whittlesey and his brother in law, William Dudley were the first ferrymen and the 2 families carried on the ferry for several generations. There was no wharf on the Saybrook side for almost 60 years, so passengers expected to get their feet wet when stepping ashore.. when the railroad opened in 1852, the ferry carried the cars across the river. the ferry made her final run, 1911.
