Maine's history is nearly as old as Massachusetts. In fact, Province of Maine was under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts until 1820.
Viewing this area you should have a map of Maine...I have the THE MAINE ATLAS and GAZETTER by DeLorme and it shows all the forts !

Cyndy > This was taken at Fort Popham and it shows location of different forts/garrisons that were in the area.

  Those doing early Maine genealogy will be familar with some of the names:
 1. Joseph Berry's Fort--West Bath
 2. Col.Noble's Fort -Pleasant Cove,1734
 3. Clark's or Lake's Fort -Spring Cove
 4. Arrousic Fort - Menaskoux
 5. John Watt's Fort - Green Point
 6. Samuel Denning's Fort -Butler's Cove
 7. Col. Noble built a garrison at Georgetown
 8. Fort at Cox's Head , 1812
 9. Fort St. George - Sabino Head, this was the Popham Colony
      of 1607.  
10. You can see the wall of this fort behind the picture frame--
 Fort Popham - Hunniwell Point.  built in 1861. Also site of early fort built in 1744.  Col.Benedict Arnold stopped here on his way up  the Kennebec River to Quebec.
11. Fort Baldwin on Sabino Hill, in Phippsburg, 1905-12.
12. Fort Sagadahoc - Stage Island
13. Fort Ancient Augusta - built 1718 to protect inhabitants from
           the Indians, only small traces of foundation remain.

* Fort George - Castine, built by British in 1779
* Fort Halifax - Winslow, 1754 on Kennebec River
* Fort Madison- Castine, 1811, occupied by British 1814-15
* Fort McClary , Kittery, 1808/9
* Fort O'Brien, Machiasport, 1775.
* Fort Preble, South Portland,1808
* Fort Scammell, House Island,Portland, 1808
* Fort Sullivan, Eastport, 1808/9
* Fort Western, Augusta,1754 (much original remains)
* Fort William Henry, destroyed in 1696, Bristol
