WRITTEN IN STONE

When I started out, most of the pictures on this site covered the time frame of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Connecticut River Valley area of Massachusetts and Connecticut ( also Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island). All pictures done at random while taking photos of my ancestors gravestones.

In the process of getting the photographs, I realized that there are very few early stones left , they are either gone or unreadable. So I decided that I would photograph the earliest stones I can find in the cemeteries.

This is Howland Cemetery in Conway, located on Shelburne Falls Road. some of the photographs are difficult to decipher ! OLD DEERFIELD (historic Deerfield), Franklin Co., : The photos on this page are of " Old Deerfield " cemetery, located on Old Albany Road or as it's called "Harrow's field".........this is a " town that time passed by"..............For serious Deerfield reseachers, there is a book: " Family & Landscape: Deerfield Homelots from 1671; Susan McGowan & Amelia F.Miller, Pomcumtuck Valley Memorial Association, 1996 which can be ordered through the on line Deerfield Museum Store...............this part of Deerfield, now called "OLD Deerfield" was attacked in 1704 by the French and Indians from Quebec,Canada. -- Many of the stones are hard to read, if anyone knows about the folks, email me and I will put your info up with your email for researchers. --------------------- There is a site for South Deerfield which is a section of Deerfield. They are posted separately to keep folks from getting confused.

SOUTH DEERFIELD (Deerfield)Franklin Co.; Sugarloaf Street in center of town : Deerfield name for the town in spite of being " South Deerfield " . I found several early names in this cemetery that were not in the "Old Deerfield" burying ground. There are NO stones prior to 1700's in either cemetery. Many of the people buried here were born in early to mid 1700's.

AMHERST, Hampshire Co......West Cemetery : this cemetery, especially where the old stones are, in implorable condition.....the sign in front states it's going under preservation.... ----------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE: Many of the stones are not VERY ancient in terms of early settlers BUT THE NAMES ARE. --------------- Another important fact to know...Amherst was part of Hadley in 1759 and in 1775, was established as a town.

LUDLOW, Hampden Co.....Old Burying Ground : The early days of Ludlow was part of Springfield.....until 1774.......the old name was " Stony Hill " The " busy" area of Ludlow is roughly 2 miles away....when the mills came in...the town grew there and the Old Ludlow Center became a quiet place. ( thank goodness )

ANDOVER, Essex Co., (I believe it's the South Cemetery) : Andover was settled about 1646.....the old name for the town was Cochichawick....and the spelling for Andover in the Mass.Bay Records was "Andiver " There is another old burying ground in Andover but didnt get to it.(2001) Most of the stones pictured here are my ancestors. It was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The original Hartford settlers memorial : The monolith of the First Founders of Hartford, in the cemetery is actually a newer version of the once old crumbling one that was located there. I have one old photo of one side of the old one. The names were the same, but located on the side in different locations than the newer one. Pictured in the photo is Dr. Edwin Dudley Smith II, his wife Elsie and child Edwin Dudley Smith III. The Smiths are descendants of George Stocking, one of the first founders. Dr. Smith's Grandfather, Edwin S. Smith married Ann Sophia Stocking in Ludlow MA. Ann was from Chatham CT, and is descended from Samuel Stocking, son of George, who migrated to Middletown CT from Hartford. Dave from Long Island Any questions, contact Dave: DMS59Dart@aol.com

South Windsor : Jonathan Edward Cemetery: God's Acre : South Windsor: oldest settlers buried here with their pastor, Timothy Edwards, son of Jonathan Edwards ; also the Grants are buried here, ancestors of President Ulysses S.Grant. East Hartford : Old Center Cemetery : East Hartford was part of Hartford until 1783..... so if you cannot find anyone here, check the Hartford photographs. Many of the names in the early Connecticut towns around Hartford, you will find northward....just follow the Connecticut River....check out the towns I have photographed. East Guilford....now Madison : East Guilford in 1707...changed to North Madison in 1753....then to Madison in 1826. West cemetery is the oldest in town and near the common....found many stones seperated from the graves against the stone wall.

POPHAM Colony area : Maine's history is nearly as old as Massachusetts. In fact, Province of Maine was under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts until 1820. Viewing this area you should have a map of Maine...I have the THE MAINE ATLAS and GAZETTER by DeLorme and it shows all the forts !
